Bachata & Salsa Workshop this Saturday

I’m quite excited to be teaching our first workshop of 2014 this Saturday and we’re back at the Anselm Community Centre again, as it was really nice there last month.

It’s in Anselm Avenue on the Mildenhall estate in Bury St Edmunds, postcode IP32 6JZ. If you need a map for the venue, contact me and I’ll send you one!

It seems like ages since we learned any bachata and that’s what we’re focussing on this Saturday, with a little bit of salsa thrown in for good measure.

We’ll have a level for absolute beginners and people with 2 left feet.

As bachata is slow, it’s a great introduction to dancing and also ideal for anyone thst’s struggling with salsa. It’s a lot easier to pick up the basics and it can help your salsa to improve too.

We’ll also have a level for more advanced dancers to learn so trickier steps and styling etc.

So if you’re not busy from 1.00 – 4.00pm this coming Saturday 18th, come and join us for some dancing and most of all, fun.

Tickets do need to be paid for in advance, as we need to know numbers to work out the classes etc.

You can pay for your ticket at any Secret Salsa class this week for £15 or you can pay online for £15.50 by clicking the link below.

New stuff for 2014

New Stuff for 2014

New class layout - 4 classes every night!

The evening will now be divided into 3 sections, starting at 8pm, as follows:

Section 1 – 45 minutes – two class levels – One for absolute beginners and one for internediate level dancers.

Section 2 – 45 mins - Two class levels – The easier class will be a follow on from the beginner class and we’ll be focussing on one or two intermediate level moves each week, which will then be incorporated into a simple dance pattern. We’ll be covering the one or two main moves each week in more depth, concentrating on strong and acurate leading and footwork from men and elegant steps and styling from ladies. The advanced level will be a continuation of the level 3 class, with added turns, styling, techinque etc.

Section 3 – 30 minutes -  Practice/socialising etc.

New pricing

1 class will now be at the slightly reduced rate of £6 and if you’d like to stay for both classes it will be just an extra £2, so £8 for the whole 2 hours.

You can also take advantage of our “Pay Monthly” option, which is still at £24 for all 2 hours for the whole month, meaning you’ll save a huge 25%.

Just visit to sign up securely with a credit/debit card via PayPal.

Learn to Dance…Faster.

Did you know that we provide private dance lessons in salsa, bachata and kizomba, to help you progress faster?

Private lessons can be 1-on-1 with just you and one of our instructors for maximum progress, or you can share the 1 hour lesson (and the costs) with your partner or a friend.

Who can they help?

1-on-1 lessons are great if:

  • You’d like to learn the basics before coming along to our weekly classes.
  • You’ve already taken a few classes and want to speed up your progress into the intermediate or advanced classes.
  • You take our advanced classes and would like to fine tune your dancing and maybe work on some specific problem areas.
  • You’re great at salsa but would like to branch out and try bachata or kizomba, but can’t make it to our workshops.
  • You’re getting married and would like to learn a routine for your wedding dance.
  • You don’t have time for regular classes or can’t make it along at the usual class time.

Benefits. There’s lots of benefits to 1on1 dance lessons. Here’s a few:

  • Focussed attention

At a group salsa class the teachers attention is split between quite a large number of people and although you may learn the basics of that weeks routine or pattern, you’ll only get a small amount of the teachers attention. During a 1-on-1 lesson, the teacher can focus completely on you, showing and teaching you just what you need at just the right time.

  • Faster progress

Because of this focussed attention,  you’ll progress at a much faster rate. If you combine this with a weekly class and a few minutes of daily practice (see homework below), you’ll see your progress increase exponentially.

  • Ask questions

During a class it may be awkward or you may not feel comfortable asking too many questions (we do encourage our students to ask questions whenever the feel the need though). During a 1-on-1 lesson, you can ask as many questions as you like, without the fear of holding up the class and your instructor can make sure you full understand the answer before moving on.

  • Homework

If you want to super charge your dancing progress, a few minutes practice each day at home (or waiting in line at the supermarket) can make a huge difference. It’s really important that you know what to practice though and your instructor can tell you the best things to practice each week, tailored to your specific level.

  • Precision fine tuning

As well as learning the basic moves, to look really good, stylish and elegant when you’re dancing, requires precision with your leading or following technique. We can go into as much (or as little) detail during a 1on1 lesson that you want or need. Learning the fine points makes a big difference!

  • New dancers

Men – although we teach you to improvise when you’re dancing, some men find it easier to learn a short routine to help them get started. We can do this very quickly in most cases and can then show you how to lead the moves smoothly so that you’ll be in great demand on the dance-floor.

Ladies – we can show you the basic techniques of how to follow well, so that you’ll be able to follow anything that you’re ever lead into. We can also help you with styling and ladies footwork to help your dancing look incredible.

  • A full 1 hour lesson (1on1 or 2 people sharing) £30
  • Or save 16.6% by booking 6 X 1 hour lessons (1on1 or 2 people sharing) for £150 (or £25 per hour)

February Denim Salsa Party

Our February denim themed party is coming up next Friday (22nd).

Tons of brand new salsa, bachata and kizomba tracks to dance to.

We’ll be holding our first “Challenge 20″ competition of the year and giving away private salsa lessons worth a total of £150!

Parties are a great opportunity for beginners to come along and try out the moves you’ve been learning over the last few weeks. It’s also a good time to get to know some of the other dancers at our classes a bit better, and also to kick back with a drink (not too many though…drinks and spins don’t go too well together) and watch some of the more experienced dancers do their thing (hopefully dancing).

More experienced dancers already know why it’s the only place to be on the last Friday of the month, so make sure you book your ticket now and don’t miss out.

Tickets are available at any Secret Salsa class or event priced £7. You can also order securely online with a credit/debit card or PayPal account at just click the PayPal link on that page. Or you can pay on the door at the party for £9.

If you’d like to go but would prefer to car share (especially if you’re coming from the King’s Lynn area) let me know as I’m organising groups to come from there and you may be able to catch a lift (I almost said “ride” then!) with someone else.

I’ll look forward to seeing you all there.

Want to improve your salsa dancing? – Get the right gear for the job – Invest in a pair of dance shoes.

Buying the right dance shoes is the easiest and fastest way to improve your dancing.

Get the best quality you can afford. Not all dance shoes are good for your feet! Although you can find really cheap shoes on the internet, if you’re serious about dancing, buying cheap shoes can be a waste of money and also damaging to your feet, so it’s worth paying a little bit more to get good quality.

Some dancers look clumsy when they dance and often this is due to wearing the wrong footwear. Ill fitting shoes with lack of support and incorrect grip can be the root cause of a lot of dance problems and it’s SO easy to fix!

Remember to change dance shoes regularly, they’re not designed to last forever. Although it’s tempting to try to keep your favourite pair of shoes until they fall to pieces, they gradually become worse and worse to dance in without you noticing. Try to change them regularly for the best results.

Comfort is important, but you can still look good. There’s a huge range of shoes out there to suit all tastes.

Here’s a couple of good sites to get you started. Have a look around and get your first pair now. It could make all the difference!

LADIES SHOES (and a few men’s)

I’ll be posting more links to other great online dance shoe shops on our facebook page at along with tons of other free stuff, so check it out now. (and remember to “like” the page to receive our updates first).

Kizomba Workshop

Everyone loves kizomba and after asking around what people would like more of at our monthly Saturday workshops, EVERYONE I asked said  MORE KIZOMBA PLEASE! Actually, they didn’t all shout it, but this coming Saturday 9th Feb we’re holding our second kizomba workshop for 2013.

We’ll have a tons of brand new moves for you and some gorgeous new kizomba tracks to dance too.

The workshop is perfect for dancers that have never tried kizomba before, as well as anyone that knows the basics and wants to move on to a higher level.

The 3 hour workshop runs from 1.00 – 4.00pm.

The basic kizomba steps are nice and easy to pick up, as it’s a nice, slow, steady rhythm, with no fast turns and spins like salsa. This means that if you struggle with salsa, joining in with our kizomba workshop will help with your rhythm, timing, leading/following etc and you’ll probably notice an imrovement in your salsa too.

This month’s workshop will be at the Moreton Hall Community Centre, Symonds Road, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 7EW.

Tickets MUST be paid for in advance, except in exceptional circumstances.

The regular price for a 3 hour ticket is just £15, or you can buy a “couples ticket” (1 leader, 1 follower) for £20, paying just £10 each!!

Tickets can be paid for at or in cash at any of our classes this week.

I hope you can make it and I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

New Class Pricing and Monthly Payment Option

Because of the rising cost of everything! :-/ I’m reluctantly having to put the price of our classes up from £6 to £7 effective from 1st Feb 2013.

To counteract the increase for our regular customers, there will also be an option to pay by the calendar month, at a fixed price of £24 for each month.

This will give you 3 big benefits:

1. The price will be lowered down to the old price of £6 per week.

2. As a pay monthly customer, you will be eligible to attend all of our classes each month at no extra charge, at both Bury St Edmunds on Tuesdays and King’s Lynn on Wednesdays. Effectively paying just £3 per class.

3. In any week when there’s 5 Tuesdays or Wednesdays in the month, you’ll get an extra week absolutely free!

The price of parties will also be rising by £1, but will still be the cheapest regular monthly parties around! (o:

If you would like to book for the month of February, please visit our website and click the appropriate link on the homepage at

The man the boy and the donkey

I love this story. It’s important to be nice, but you’ll never please everyone.

The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey

A man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a man passed them and said: “You fools, why aren’t you riding on your donkey? Surely that’s what it’s for!”

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: “See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides.”

So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn’t gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: “Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along.”

Well, the Man didn’t know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor Donkey of yours—you and your hulking son?”

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they decided to carry the Donkey between them. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to lose his grip. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and drowned.

The moral of the story?

If you try to please everyone, you may as well kiss your ass goodbye!
